Environmental guidelines for the use of coal ash in agriculture

The environmental guidelines for the use of coal ash in agriculture distinguish between fly ash used for soil improvement and bottom used as a growth medium for plants. While the present guidelines require site-specific investigation of the effect of each application on the environment and the agricultural product, the upgraded guidelines for fly ash set threshold conditions based on a model for Boron, Vanadium, Selenium and Molybdenum (most soluble micro-elements in fly ash) mobility in soil under known environmental conditions, which was developed for that purpose. Growing edible crops on a medium containing coal ash requires an approval of the Food & Nutrition Services.
